Because the EU, and then countries in East Asia, identified biomass as a ‘renewable energy technology’, the use of biomass was directly subsidized by those governments.  In the case of Drax, those subsidies amount to millions of dollars a day.  Pellet manufacturers also got access to ‘green loans’.
